Opportunities to volunteer for the Science Council Registration Authority

3rd October 2024

The Science Council is currently recruiting for new volunteer positions on their Registration Authority (RA). The RA plays a leading role as the guardian of standards, overseeing continuing professional development (CPD), and leading on peer review across science.

Who are they looking for?

Applicants are likely to have a background in setting professional standards and/or quality assurance. Science Council Professional Registration is desirable. Previous committee experience is also desirable but not essential as support and development opportunities will be available. Knowledge and experience of the charitable/non-for-profit sector would be an advantage but is not essential.

If you have knowledge and experience in any of the following areas, the Science Council would particularly like to hear from you:

  • Education landscape, (Further and Higher) particularly the education and training pathways to registration
  • Accreditation of training providers
  • Business and commercial links
  • Science & Technician workforce

Benefits of Joining the RA

Joining the RA is a pathway to influence the credibility and integrity of science. As a member, you will be involved in developing the high-quality professional standards that scientists and science technicians strive to meet. You will also be ensuring that Licensed Bodies adhere to the Licensing Standards by applying quality assurance processes. It is an opportunity for networking and making a tangible difference in the scientific community. In 2025, the Science Council will be undertaking their quinquennial review of standards for Professional Registration, so this is an opportune time to be joining the RA.

The expected time commitment is between six to eight full days per year, including preparing for and attending meetings, and providing advice and input outside of meetings from time to time. The RA will meet four times in 2025; all meetings are held between 1030 and 1430 midweek.
