2023 Celebration of Science

20th November 2023

The Science Council ran the 2023 Celebration of Science, which took place on 15 November 2023 at the Thinktank, an award-winning Birmingham Science Museum.

Prof Andy Lane FBASES represented BASES at the event, which saw a keynote by Dr Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist and author, who spoke about combining being a science communicator with being an active researcher. There was also a celebration to mark the achievements of CPD Award winners, recognize volunteers and applaud apprentices and their journey.

Prof Andy Lane FBASES commented: “It was a great honour to represent BASES at the Science Council’s event. CPD is central for professional development and rewarding it is key for the development of a profession. I was very pleased to hear Phil Graham-Smith was a recipient of a CPD award. I have known Phil for over 20 years and know he has just returned from working in Doha and so it was great to catch up with Phil and his wife at the event.

The evening was a good. The Thinktank is a splendid venue. There were awards for apprentice winners and it was fabulous to hear colleagues share their stories about how their career flourished by choosing to work and learn. It was joy to hear about Phil’s award and see BASES placed on centre stage at such an event. Sport and exercise did rather well tonight.”

BASES stands for the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. BASES is the professional body for sport and exercise sciences in the UK.
